Author, humorist, and feminist Gina Barreca is also a speaker. At the University of Connecticut, where she has been a professor for more than 30 years, she teaches feminist theory and English literature. In Waterbury, Connecticut, Barreca was born in 1956. Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, awarded her a bachelor’s in arts, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison awarded her a doctorate in English literature. Barreca started teaching at the University of Connecticut after earning her doctorate and has already worked there for more than 30 years.
She is the author of several books, including “They Used to Call Me Snow White, But I Drifted: Women’s Strategic Use of Humor” (1991) which is a collection of essays and personal anecdotes that explore the ways in which women use humor to deal with their everyday lives. Her other books include “It’s Not That I’m Bitter, Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Visible Panty Lines and Conquered the World” (1998) which is a humorous and insightful book of essays that deal with the challenges and rewards of being a woman in today’s society.
Barreca is a regular columnist for the Hartford Courant, and her work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Huffington Post. She is also a humorist and keynote speaker and has spoken at various venues including conferences, colleges, and corporations.
She has also been a guest on various television and radio programs, including The Today Show, NPR, and CNN. In addition to her work as a writer and speaker, Barreca is also an active member of various organizations, including the National Organization for Women and the Women’s Media Center.
Barreca has received honours throughout her career for her work as a writer, lecturer, and feminist activist as well as for her contributions to feminism studies. For her contributions to the field of feminist research, she has won various accolades and been inducted into halls of fame, including the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.
